Ruriko Yamamiya was born in Niigata, Japan. She started playing Irish harp at the age of four and four years later changed to concert harp. She studied harp with Futaba Yamada and Yusuke Yamazaki. Since 2007 she is studying with Xavier de Maistre at Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg (Germany).
She won several prizes in international competitions such as; The third prize at The 16th Nippon Harp Competition (advanced division) in 2004, The second prize and two special prizes at The 58th ARD International Music Competition (Munich) in 2009, The sixth prize at The 8 th USA International Harp Competition (Bloomington) in 2010, and The first prize by unanimous consent at The 7th Lily Laskine International Harp Competition (Paris) in 2011.
As a solist Ruriko Yamamiya has performed with NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonic Südwestfalen Orchestra and Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.
